In 1961, Russian-American retirees who had settled in Ft Lauderdale wanted a parish of their own. They took out personal loans and second mortgages to insure that their dream would become a reality. Today the parish is a growing community of young and elder, 2nd and 3rd generation American born and new emigres. St Nicholas is home to families primarily of Slavic origin (Russian, Carpatho-Russian, Macedonian, Serbian, Bulgarian).
The young and enthusiastic parishioners, looking to the future, have undertaken a large renovation project. They have given of money, time and talent in respect for the founders and in building on their dreams of a vibrant parish: to ensure that the St Nicholas community will have a long future glorifying God, remembering our ancestry and witnessing to Orthodoxy in South Florida.
